Information for voters

How to responsibly ditch the DNC

If you are already registered to vote in North Carolina and only want to change your party affiliation, the process can be simple and fast. We recommend handling affiliation changes separately from name changes, because changing your name usually requires a different set of steps and documents.

Deadline for the 2026 midterms

In North Carolina, you generally need to change your registration before the voter-registration deadline for the election in question. For the 2026 midterms, the deadline is October 9, 2026, for the general election. If you are acting before that date, your change should be reflected in time for the election.

Countdown: 96 days, 6 hours, and 14 minutes until the registration deadline.

Step 1

Confirm your current registration

Use the North Carolina State Board of Elections voter lookup tool to confirm that you are registered and that your address and other details are already correct.

Step 2

Change only your affiliation

If you are already registered and only want to change your party affiliation, use the online change form provided by the North Carolina DMV (this links directly to the registration application page).

If you have a screenshot of an official site that contains the link, upload it below and use the annotator to mark the exact placement of the link. The annotator will show your image in grayscale and allow you to place a red circle over the exact spot; you can then export an annotated PNG.

What to expect

Simple, fast, and worth doing early

Keep it simple

Do the affiliation change first

The affiliation change is the straightforward part. If you are already registered, you can usually complete it online in about five minutes.

Separate the steps

Do name changes through the correct process

Name changes require additional documentation and a separate update path. Doing them separately makes the process less confusing and reduces the chance of delays.

Act early

Do it before the deadline

North Carolina registration deadlines are strict. If you are planning to vote in the 2026 midterms, make the change before the registration deadline so it is reflected on your record.
